How to Read a Senior Care Inspection Report

Navigating Technical Inspection Documents

Inspection reports, often called “surveys,” can be dozens of pages long. To read them effectively:

  • Look for the “Form CMS-2567”: This is the standard document where deficiencies are listed.
  • Focus on Quality of Care: Look for citations related to pressure sores, medication errors, and hydration.
  • Check the Plan of Correction (PoC): Inspection reports may indicate what the facility promised to do to fix the problem.

Families may want to ask to see the most recent survey results during their visit, as facilities are required to make them available.

Senior Care Report Card summarizes publicly available inspection, enforcement, staffing, complaint, and quality data. Information may be delayed, incomplete, or updated by official agencies. Families should verify directly with official sources and facilities before making care decisions. Senior Care Report Card does not provide legal, medical, or government advice.
